The 0.5µg/100cm² Standard
Australia’s nationally recognised safe level is 0.5 micrograms of methamphetamine per 100cm² of surface area.
- Below 0.5µg/100cm² — property is considered safe
- Above 0.5µg/100cm² — decontamination required before the property can be safely occupied

Types of Meth Testing
Instant Swab Testing
Rapid field-test swabs that produce a result on-site within minutes. Suitable as a first-pass screen to determine if further laboratory testing is needed. Instant swabs indicate the presence of meth but do not provide the precise measurement required for clearance certificates or insurance purposes.
Best for: Quick initial screening before committing to a full laboratory test.
NATA-Accredited Laboratory Testing
Surface swab samples are collected by a certified technician and sent to a NATA-accredited laboratory. Results are measured in micrograms per 100cm² against the 0.5µg/100cm² Australian standard. Laboratory results are legally defensible and accepted by insurers, courts, and property tribunals.
Best for: Pre-purchase inspections, insurance claims, end-of-tenancy disputes, and clearance certification.
Lab Composite vs Field Composite Sampling
When NATA-accredited laboratory testing is carried out, the way individual swabs are combined and processed affects both the cost and the precision of your results. There are two main sampling methods to understand:
Field Composite Sampling
Multiple swabs collected from a single room or zone are physically combined into one sample before being sent to the laboratory for analysis. The result represents an average reading across that zone.
Cost: Lower — fewer lab analyses required
Precision: Room-level reading — hot-spots within the zone may be missed
Best for: Initial screening and general contamination assessment
Lab Composite Sampling
Individual swabs are kept separate and each one is analysed independently at the laboratory. Results are then reviewed together, giving a precise picture of contamination at each specific location within the property.
Cost: Higher — each swab is analysed individually
Precision: Location-specific results — hot-spots are clearly identified
